From the beginning of June 2024, the city of Lyon will significantly change its parking pricing policy. The environmentalist majority will mainly target the heaviest vehicles to “guarantee better sharing of public space”, she announced this Tuesday during a press conference.
Concretely, instead of a uniform resident rate of 20 euros per month for parking near your home, three new brackets will be created. The first “reduced” rate (15 euros per month) concerns thermal vehicles weighing less than one ton and electric vehicles weighing less than 2,200 kilos. The second so-called “standard” tranche (30 euros per month) concerns thermal cars from 1000 to 1525 kg and plug-in hybrids from 1000 to 1900 kg. Finally, the last one called “increased” (45 euros per month) will be dedicated to thermal vehicles over 1525 kg, plug-in hybrids over 1900 kg and electric vehicles over 2100 kg. Around 60% of vehicles registered in Lyon are concerned by the standard model and, in equal parts, 20% by the reduced and increased models.
Furthermore, any household with three or more children or an income per unit of less than €13,800 will be subject to the reduced rate for their vehicle. Concretely, a family with three children and a thermal vehicle weighing more than 1,525 kg will be entitled to a reduced rate. This pricing based on weight could lead to situations where a large family with a particularly polluting vehicle, a Hummer for example (more than 2.7 tonnes for the H1), will benefit from the €15 price, where a single person with a Yaris hybrid (just over a tonne) will be charged the standard price.
These “reduced”, “standard” and “increased” categories will also be deployed for visitor parking which will see the Tempo and Presto prices disappear in favor of new prices depending on the vehicle category (see table below).
Furthermore, the city will adopt new annual pricing for traders with decreasing prices depending on the size of the vehicle fleet and engine. Professionals in the repair, construction and health sectors, as well as tradespeople, will be able to benefit from an annual or monthly rate to park more easily in the city (see slideshow below).
“These prices come from the regular dialogue that we have with institutional stakeholders but also through regular questions from artisans and traders on the cost of parking. The reality is that some people no longer come to Lyon because of the cost it represents for them or reflect it on quotes. However, their interventions are essential for the functioning of the city. This is why we wanted to make their lives easier,” declared Camille Augey, assistant for commerce and crafts. This new pricing will be presented to Lyon’s elected officials during the city council meeting on March 21.
