Robert Fico, Slovak Prime Minister Injured by Gunshots in Mid-May, Ready to Resume Duties by Late June
In a surprising turn of events, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was the victim of an assassination attempt in mid-May, expressed his readiness to return to his duties by the end of June. In a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Fico stated that he harbors no hatred towards his attacker and is willing to gradually resume his responsibilities by the end of the month.
This marks the first time Fico has addressed the public through a video since the attack, where he was shot four times at close range, including in the abdomen, while greeting supporters after a government meeting in Handlova, central Slovakia, on May 15. The alleged shooter, identified as 71-year-old poet Juraj Cintula, is facing charges of premeditated attempted murder and is currently in custody.
Following two extensive surgeries at a hospital in Banska Bystrica, Fico was moved home for further recovery on May 31. He mentioned in his recording that if his progress continues as expected, he plans to gradually return to work between the months of June and July.
Despite the harrowing experience, Fico’s forgiving attitude towards his assailant has garnered attention and praise from the public. His calm demeanor and willingness to forgive have set a tone of reconciliation and understanding in the face of violence.
As the Slovak Prime Minister prepares to make his comeback, the nation watches with bated breath to see how this resilient leader will navigate the challenges ahead and lead the country once again.
