During the severe Bush fires in Australia, more than 2000 Koalas are to experts estimate that since October, have already burned. At a hearing in front of the Parliament in Canberra, scientists were on Monday concerned that due to the continuing fire could kill many more animals.

The Director of a Koala hospital in the state of New South Wales, Cheyne Flanagan, said: “We have some fires behind us, but there never was. It is terrible. And the whole summer before us.”

Together with kangaroos, Koalas are one of the most well-known animals that are only native to Australia. The so-called marsupial live mainly in trees. There you can hardly move. According to the conservation organisation, the Australia Koala Foundation (AKF), there are still between 43 000 and 100’000 Koalas. Normally, the time of the Bush fires begins in Australia in December. This year it started already in October. (Dec/sda)
