the ROME – From 1 December 2019, more than 500,000 children have been displaced by the intense violence in the North-West of Syria, with tens of thousands of children and their families who live in tents in the open air, between the cold and the rain. From the beginning of the year, have been verified in the deaths or wounding of 77 children (28 killed and 49 injured) due to the escalation of violence in the area. Only yesterday, the UNICEF has received news that the last two hospitals in operation in the western part of the governorate of Aleppo have been hit. One of the two, was a hospital mother-to-child.
Testimonials from the field. “The situation in the North-West of the Country is unsustainable,” said Henrietta Fore, director general of UNICEF. “The children and the families are stuck between violence, intense cold, lack of food and living conditions were desperate. Such contempt for the safety and well-being of children and families exceeds each limit, and must not continue”. “We walked for 3 days and now we live in tents. All our things are soup of rain and mud,” says Nadia, a mother, displaced from Saraqeb (Idlib), and who is now living in the area of Aleppo. “I have a child very sick, which urgently needs to be operated, but I can’t afford it. If my son dies, I will not be able to bury him.”
The assistrenza provided by UNICEF. Working with its partners in the field, UNICEF continues to distribute aid, life saving and families who need assistance, including those recently displaced. This assistance includes hygiene kits, safe water to drink, warm clothes for the winter, visits and treatment of malnutrition, psychosocial support and education. In addition, UNICEF is working with its partners to deliver vaccines, especially to children who had not received the vaccination earlier. UNICEF is also ensuring that the aid is necessary to bring forward immunization campaigns, including the cold chain to protect the safety of vaccines.
