WORLD: In your book about Hannah Arendt and Ralph Ellison you talk about minorities, but are they really minorities? The descendants of slaves were certainly not a minority in the US Southern States in the 1950s. How do you define the concept of minority?
Marie Luise Knott: Well, where are groups in a minority in a society? I don’t think minorities are defined by whether a group is numerically in the minority in all places. Jews were the majority in the shtetl. And, of course, there were places in the American South where blacks made up almost 40 percent of the population, such as in Mississippi in the 1960s. In terms of numbers, you can’t really speak of a “minority”.
