“We abrasion to work,” says singer and guitarist Alex Edkins, when he speaks with the “Züritipp” about the early restless years of his Band. For more than ten years, he is forming with Chris Slorach (Bass), and Hayden Menzies (drums) and the Noise-Rock Trio Metz. Sub-contract with Sub Pop, includes the discography of the canadian three Studio albums and a Singles compilation.
Between 2012 and 2015, toured Metz almost continuously. Since the last Album, “Strange Peace” (2017), take more breaks – not least because of their families: “We are still very focused on our Band, but it’s good to shift the perspective of something in life,” says Edkins.
“I don’t know how audible this is, but I like while pop melodies and hooks.”Alex Edkins
Edkins looks relaxed. If Metz are on Tour, then the band members three to four times a week in their rehearsal space in Toronto, discuss business, and are working on ideas for the upcoming fourth Album. It’s supposed to be harder and darker than anything made Metz until now, but with the complacency of the flirt: “I don’t know how audible this is, but I like while pop melodies and hooks.” Edkins penchant for Pop through already on previous albums: in addition to dissonant electric guitars, a Zerrbass and intricate drum rhythms, there’s singing, often in harmony, inspired by the Beat of the 60s.

Since the “Strange Peace” recorded at Nirvana producer Steve Albini, the Band the quiet room. While the previous albums were driven by a fearful restlessness, there was with “Caterpillar” and “Sink” for the first time, two of the gentler Songs. You are an expression of a larger self-confidence. “We made the Album what we really wanted, and not being guided, that we had with noisy Songs, our audience, for sure.” The Trio has created a guitar roar, interspersed with caesuras, – almost the calm before the storm: have Written Metz the Songs during the last US presidential elections.
It is fear – especially fear of the future – of what Edkins in the texts processed again and again. In this case, the discomfort seems to move increasingly from the personal to the global level.
