REPLICA. It is with great interest I follow the debate on Hungary in Sweden.

Article Aftonbladet published november 26 2018 based unfortunately on false facts and wrong perceptions.

It gives misleading information about the Hungary with a simplified message. Facts play a big role in a debate, therefore I feel compelled to give some comments.

I dismiss the several opinions in the article, but here I limit myself to three examples according to the debattörernas argumentation should lead to sanctions against Hungary.

first, all forms of anti-semitism is punished severely according to the laws of the Hungary and the Hungarian government has introduced a zero tolerance policy against anti-semitism.

The big jewish community has a safe and stable place in Hungary which is appreciated not only by them but also by Israel. To refer to anti-semitism is, therefore, misleading.

secondly, to reinstate the death penalty is not on the agenda in Hungary. This statement is not true.

thirdly, the claim of increased political control over the judiciary is also unfounded. The independence of the judiciary is protected by the Hungarian constitution.

Hungarian judges are as independent as the English. For more details, please see the the Hungarian government’s comments european Parliament resolution on to activate article 7 against Hungary.

Finally, I want to dismiss the article’s message that links the wrong facts about Hungary to the debate on the EU’s framtidsbudget. The EU budget’s purpose is not to finance one or another member state, without providing the Union with funds to assist with the common EU policy that benefits us all.

Hungary’s interest is a strong Europe that provides security and welfare to its citizens and strengthen the economic growth and member states ‘ regional and social cohesion.

I believe in trust and respect between our countries and the people play a large role in these debates. Why should evidence-based messages dominate when we talk with and about each other.

With that in mind I offer my cooperation to build a dialogue based on facts rather than opinions and misinformation.

Adrien Müller , ambassador of Hungary in Sweden
