The head of the League, Matteo Salvini, has denied wanting to go into the visit in the English city of Liverpool, after the labour mayor, Steve Rotheram, has been accused of being a “fascist” and calls it a “guest does not welcome”.
The controversy is born from the alarm spread, first on a local newspaper in Liverpool, who had reported the possibility of an arrival between march and April – the populist leader in the English town, and had called to gather the parties of the left, for a mobilization against Salvini. The news was later picked up by the national newspaper and wire-to-labour The Guardian. Called to respond to this opportunity, the mayor of Liverpool has attacked openly Salvini, calling him “fascist”. And he added: “The division and hatred in the tradition of Mussolini will not be welcomed in the city”.
“my presence in Liverpool has never been programmed,” she responded, Salvini reporters in a conference to the foreign press, in particular by calling on the correspondent to Rome for “the Guardian”, Angela Giuffrida.
“What we’re organizing is not a rally,” he explained, but a dinner among the supporters of the League to Liverpool, as there will be in Brazil, Switzerland, Belgium or Canada. It has never happened that a mayor would intervene on a dinner free of free citizens, who are not subversive nor mad: eat fish and chips. Sooner or later I’ll go, but I’m sorry that you judge without knowing.” And then he invited ironically Rotheram to visit Milan and not only, and not so much for “eating polenta and osso buco,” but also “why so that you can see that Milan is not invaded by hordes of fascists in the black shirt”.
