Facing the pandemic coronavirus “is an extraordinary intervention of the european Union”. To write it from his quarantine is Nicola Zingaretti in a letter addressed to the leaders of progressive continental. “In all our Countries, writes the secretary of the Pd in a letter posted on Facebook – we are living through a period of dramatically difficult and complicated.A situation that, in Italy as in other Countries, is requiring the Governments, the local authorities, to health care institutions, the police and the Armed Forces, an effort and extraordinary measures to contain the spread and put the security of the economic system”. Zingaretti thanks to “the scientific community, healthcare professionals, public employees, teachers, school personnel,workers engaged in the sectors of production which are still active,” and then explains that “we in Italy, the continuation of and increase in the acute phase of the infection has led to drastic restrictive measures on the mobility of the citizens, on their working and social life throughout the Country. Measures that are unprecedented in time of peace in Europe”.
Zingaretti tells, briefly, the effects of Coronavirus in Italy – “it’s changing our lives,our habits and the product, unfortunately, very serious consequences on the economy of our Country, the fact that the Government has already begun to address, with determination, a first measure of support, assistance and relief” – and adds that it “will follow in these hours, other extraordinary measures and very substantial, to kick-start the economy and safeguard productive sectors affected by the crisis of these past few weeks and avoid this emergency to produce permanent effects on output and employment”.
Remembered the Plan for Italy and the mobilization of extraordinary of the democratic Party, and the first measures of the European Commission, Zingaretti launches his appeal to the leading progressives of the the continent: “I Think it’s important that all of our Parties are to the forefront in affirming that in the face of a global challenge to produce serious consequences on each plan, no person, no territory, no Country should have to feel isolated in facing a new situation. Serves as a mobilization and a common european dimension of this crisis. And serve quick and strong european choices in the economic field. Also on the part of the Ecb. And this is the time to use in positive the chance that a system – such as that of the European Union – rules and common policies, we can give, avoiding any locking, and giving our citizens a sense of shared commitment. This crisis is a serious emergency overall, also a test for Europe. And’ the future of Europe itself that is at stake, and not only for profiles, techno-economic, but for its ability to act as a political subject, of the community’s real intentions. Not as a summation of the choices individual. It is in crises that may emerge from the turns, and these turns should feel strong in our voice”.
