Car Toyota and the American truck manufacturer Paccar go together trucks to develop hydrogen-powered drive. That will first be deployed in a pilot project in the port area of Los Angeles.

Brian Lindgren, director of Paccar part Kenworth, says that to drive a hydrogen-powered fuel cell is more logical than only with batteries, when it comes to heavy-duty trucks with a weight limit of more than 14.969 kg, writes CNBC. Lindgren states that the vehicles that run on hydrogen drive faster refueling and greater range. According to the director, to keep drivers from waterstofvrachtwagens, because they are ‘strong and silent’. Eventually they drive, after all, just electric.

Last year, Toyota and Paccar, the owner of DAF, although a number of prototypes of waterstoftrucks revealed. Then it went to converted Kenworth T680-trucks, which are suitable for hydrogen propulsion. Toyota and Paccar have not yet any official specifications of the new trucks are released, but under normal circumstances it would be a range of 482 km should be possible. According to Lindgren, is the waterstofverbruik approximately similar to diesel fuel: a litre on the 2.1 to 3 km.

Tesla launches in the coming years, fully electric-powered trucks, of which some versions of 482 km. There should also be versions with a range of 750 to 800 km. Elon Musk does not believe in hydrogen.

It is intended that the trucks from Paccar and Toyota in any case be used for transporting loads to and from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Daily driving there are now about 16,000 regular trucks. And want the local authorities, partly because of the air pollution in the region by 2035.
