Philippe Gilbert, the world champion of 2012, winning after 257 km of the two print against the German Nils Politt. The preliminary rounds, the end scene was a good 14 kilometers from the finish, as Politt from a five-strong lead group out of the attack, and only the 36-year-old Gilbert was the surprisingly strong German follow. Together, the Duo reached the legendary open-racing track of Roubaix.
Surrender at Politts attack Peter Sagan had to. The world champion and last year’s winner had previously controlled the race, a good 50 kilometers from the finish, the Finale is launched and in the Wake of numerous attacks of his opponent countered. The Slovak left, apparently, to many forces, in the end, only “the 5th place was left to him”. Third behind the leading Duo, with Yves Lampaert another Belgian.
Only the Milan – Sanremo is missing Gilbert
for Years, Philippe Gilbert, Paris – Roubaix had shunned after its Premiere in 2007. Only last year he ventured back to the exam. The victory of Sagan and the 2. Rank of Silvan Dillier had joined the Belgians in 15th place. Now Gilbert, triumphed something of a surprise in only his third Start; the veteran had to non-members also heard because of the lack of experience on the cobblestone pave of the most-mentioned Victory.
A driver of his class you have to have but in every major one-day races on the invoice. A look at his Palmares shows. Gilbert had already finished twice in the tour of Lombardy (2009 and 2010), as well as the liège-Bastogne-liège (2011) and the tour of Flanders (2016) as the winner. Of the five so-called monuments of Cycling, he has won only Milan – Sanremo.
Küng just outside the Top 10
Behind the best riders of the day, was also felt in the Swiss Stefan Küng a good impression. The Thurgau was the first major chase group and finished fourth at the end of the 11. Rank. As the co-favorites Greg van Avermaet and John Degenkolb Küng had missed the connection in Sagan’s pace of tightening to 50 kilometers from the finish. Previously Küng a tip was not a member of a group that came way early again.
No racing fortune Silvan Dillier, who had shone in the previous year, with 2nd place behind Sagan. The Aargau had been complaining of a Defect, and played in this year, no role. (sda)
