“Sweden may lose EU mandate”
“Sweden expects an additional seat in the EUROPEAN parliament during the next term of office. But if the Uk shoots up the exit from the union after election day in may smokes extramandatet – at least initially.”
“If Britain’s prime minister, Theresa May may as she would like to be extended the country’s EU withdrawal to the June 30. It would in such cases mean that the Uk must be in the elections to the EUROPEAN parliament on 26 may – but also to Sweden, in all cases at the beginning, loses its assigned extramandat.”
“the Current scheme”
“the European council decided in June last year to 27 of the Uk’s seats in the EUROPEAN parliament shall be redistributed between the other member states when the country will leave the union. And among other things, that the Swedish representatives should be increased from 20 to 21 pieces.”
“– But if the Uk is still at the beginning of the parliamentary term, so should the current arrangements apply until the member’s withdrawal is effective, ” says Pierre Herges, official at the Swedish EU representation in Brussels.”
“however, the Question is what happens then, when the Uk leaves the union later in the term.”
“Among the member states there has been some confusion, according to Herges.”
” We have had some discussions where some people wondered how to arrange this. If a country receives an additional mandate, but then did not have to assume, if the person then stand in a kind of waiting room, ” he says.”
“– But as I understand it, it can be handled in different ways in different member states.”
“Jenny City, press secretary of the electoral board, says that in accordance with the electoral law will then make a new seats based on previous election results.”
“– And it is then the party that is the closest to that have the mandate who will get it, ” explains City.”
“In the european Parliament sit a total of 751 members, who are apportioned based on each member state’s population.”
“Most have Germany (96), followed by France (74) Italy (73) united kingdom (73), Spain (54) and Poland (51).”
“When Britain leaves the EU, the number of members to be reduced to 705 pieces. Of the country’s 73 seats are held 43 in the reserve for possible enlargements of the union in the future and 27 are redistributed between the other member states. For example, Sweden may, further to a mandate, from the current 20 to 21 pieces.”
