The first horse from the Skånsta Riders in London who fell ill came to the university animal hospital (in Uppsala in the beginning of January.

the Horse’s owner did not know what the test results which were proved and, therefore, were not stable in the quarantine.

First, a few weeks later when Skånsta Ryttares ridskolechef Ann Borglund came to the hospital with the next sick horse, she got the news that it was the infectious virus EHV-1, also known as abortvirus, that made the horses sick.

Behind the mistake lay ”the human factor”, says Universitetsdjursjukhusets manager Henrik Ericsson.

– by going Through our administrative procedures, but above all, we will replace our log system. With the new system, will the results to go directly into the journal and reach more people. Not as now by e-mail to a person, “says Henrik Ericsson, who is head of the university animal hospital (,” he says.

The current journalsystemet is åldersdigert, and the decision to upgrade it was taken already prior to the outbreak of EHV-1.

” It is not possible to answer. The horse where we missed the results were never going home again, but was euthanized on the spot. The infection was in other words already in the stables, ” says Henrik Ericsson.

” Yes, at the hospital, we have followed our procedures. The care and isolation has worked well.

” What you wish is that we had multiple locations. Although we do have Sweden’s largest isoleringsavdelning, and is the only one that has a so-called hammock on the insulation, but although it has not been enough.

“It would have been an advantage if the other animal hospitals in Sweden had the opportunity to receive more,” says Henrik Ericsson.

A hammock is a sling that is used for horses who, for whatever reasons, need help to stand. That the horse do not put themselves down can be important to save the horse’s life.

” I have been very angry and upset that we did not notice, but in the end, I felt that I must drop it. It took too much energy, and I needed the energy to take care of our sick horses, ” says Skånsta Ryttares ridskolechef Ann Borgman.
