FC Barcelona has registered Spanish playmaker Ricky Rubio, who has come out of retirement, in order to possibly play him in the league (ACB) and the Euroleague, the Catalan club announced in a press release on its website on Tuesday. “FC Barcelona and Ricky Rubio have agreed to sign the Catalan playmaker until the end of the season. This agreement is subject to the evolution of the player, who is in the final stages of his recovery,” writes Barça.
Under this agreement, the Spanish playmaker, who has passed medical tests at the Catalan club’s facilities, will be able to play matches in the Spanish championship as well as the Euroleague. But his return will only take place “when he himself deems it appropriate”, underlines the current 2nd in the Euroleague. The 33-year-old, who announced in January his withdrawal from the NBA “to take care of (his) mental health”, after having announced a break in August for the same reason, thus finds the team with which he won eight titles in two seasons (2009-2010 and 2010-2011), including a Euroleague and an ACB, before making the jump to the NBA.
Rubio spent twelve years on the floors of the big American League under the jersey of Minnesota, Utah, Phoenix and Cleveland. He was a pillar of the Spanish team, crowned world champion in 2019, silver medalist at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and bronze in Rio in 2016.
