Coach Mikel Arteta refused to say whether Aaron Ramsdale or David Raya would start in the Arsenal goal on Wednesday in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven, appearing annoyed by the journalists’ reminders at a press conference on Tuesday.
The Spanish technician entrusted the keys to defense for the first time to Raya, who arrived this summer from Brentford (loan with option to buy), Sunday during the victory at Everton (1-0) in the league, at the expense of usual number one Aaron Ramsdale. “I respect the opinions and I understand the questions,” Arteta initially responded. “It’s my job to answer questions in the best possible way and do what I think is best for the team and the club,” he added, not very forthcoming.
After the victory at Goodison Park, the 41-year-old coach had already spoken on the subject, explaining that competition concerned the whole team. “I can’t have two players in each position and not use them. David has enormous qualities, like Aaron and we must use them. He pushed his explanations by declaring that he “regretted”, in the past, not having had “the courage” on two occasions to replace his goalkeeper in the middle of a match, as he does with the outfield players, a statement widely commented on in England.
Relaunched on the qualities specific to Ramsdale and Raya, the former midfielder cut it short on Tuesday in the match eve conference. “It’s not a subject I want to dwell on. Each player has a different personality, different characteristics. Arsenal, reigning English vice-champion, returns to the Champions League after six years of absence. Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli, injured on Sunday, is unavailable for Wednesday’s (9:00 p.m.) reception at PSV Eindhoven, Arteta confirmed.
