Lyon is in the semi-final of the Coupe de France after its victory on penalties on Tuesday against RC Strasbourg (0-0, 4-3 tab).
The Lyonnais, in full resurrection in the championship after a catastrophic start to the season, reached the last four thanks to a flawless shootout. On the Strasbourg side, Thomas Delaine and Lucas Perrin missed their attempt.
The first quarter-final of the 2024 Coupe de France pitted two teams with opposing dynamics against each other. Olympique Lyonnais has let very few points escape it in recent weeks, and remained on five consecutive victories in all competitions before the match. Opposite, Strasbourg is in bad shape in Ligue 1, three points from the red zone after four defeats in a row.
At Groupama Stadium, Alsatians coach Patrick Vieira had to reinvent himself to hope to compete against Les Gones. The unique 3-4-3, with a defense of three with the ball and five without, managed to contain the enthusiasm of an OL who started strong. Thanks to a strong Saïd Benrahma who was definitely integrated into the team, the Gones were dangerous from the start. Before the confrontation gradually becomes balanced, and Racing tightens up properly. The two teams separated with a score of 0-0 at halftime.
Returning from the locker room, the same observation: the two teams had difficulty deciding between themselves. Elusive, Benrahma hit the post on a direct corner, and the locals pushed. In vain. Strasbourg had a few counterattacks to negotiate but did not manage to worry the Lyon defense too much.
Strasbourg and Lyonnais were finally decided after a penalty session. On the Lyon side, no player missed. Concerning the Alsatians, Delaine came up against Perri at the start, then Perrin succumbed to the pressure (final result 0-0, 4-3 after T.A.B.). Lyon returns to the semi-finals of the Coupe de France as in 2023 against Nantes. The RCSA comes out with its head held high.
