Thanks to an easy victory (4-2) against Iceland on Thursday in Bratislava, Slovakia qualified for Euro 2024 by securing second place in Group J behind Portugal, calm winner in Liechtenstein (0 -2) with an achievement by Cristiano Ronaldo. It is the 11th team to obtain its ticket for the Euro which will be held in Germany next June, and joins in particular Hungary, which also won its ticket on Thursday evening, by snatching a draw in Bulgaria.
The Slovaks, however, saw the Icelanders open the scoring through Oskarsson (17th) but they then rolled on, scoring four goals in 25 minutes, and will participate in their third consecutive continental meeting. A draw was enough for them before the match, but the teammates of PSG defender Milan Skriniar were not satisfied with that and are now certain to finish in second place with 19 points, behind Portugal. Kucka (30th), Duda on penalty (36th) and a double from winger Lukas Haraslin (47th, 55th) allowed Slovakia to win largely.
In 2016, the Central European country qualified for the Euro for the first time in its history since independence in 1993. The Slovaks then reached the round of 16 before losing to Germany ( 3-0). In 2021, the adventure ended at the group stage. With 11 points, Montenegro, 2-0 winner of Bosnia, can still believe in qualification behind Hungary, but Serbia, second with 13 points, will have their destiny in their hands before the last qualifying match on Sunday against Bulgaria.
