Spain ensured its qualification for Euro-2024 football by winning 1-0 on Sunday in Oslo against Norway thanks to a goal from FC Barcelona prodigy Gavi.
The Spaniards, who take the lead in Group A with 15 points, ahead of Scotland, also qualified thanks to this result, are now assured of finishing among the first two. Norway, third, five points from the lead, are behind and will have to get a positive result against Scotland in their last match to try to qualify for the play-offs, while hoping that Serbia qualifies in the group G. As a symbol, it is the young Barça prodigy Gavi, 19 years old, face of the renewal of La Roja, who offered the three points synonymous with qualification to his team. His fifth goal in 25 caps, already.
The midfielder opened the scoring in the 48th minute from the left following a mix-up in the Norwegian defense, grouped in their own half throughout the match. “Gavi is a fantastic player, an extraordinary boy, who influences everyone with his character and we are very happy that he is with us” declared Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente at a press conference.
Carvajal praised the good defense on Norwegian striker Erling Haaland: “From defense to attack, we were very compact, we hardly let (Haaland) receive a single ball comfortably,” said Carvajal. greeted Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal on Spanish public television. “They (the Norwegians) hardly created any chances. We are coming home happy to have won our ticket to the Euro,” he added.
Crowned in 2008 and 2012 and semi-finalist in 2021, Spain therefore validates its ticket to Germany (June 14-July 14), where it will try to confirm its return to the forefront at international level, after its victory in the League of Nations in June.
In group D, Turkey also validated its ticket for the Euro by beating Latvia (4-0).
