OM coach Jean-Louis Gasset estimated on Wednesday that Atalanta Bergamo, which his team will face on Thursday in the semi-final first leg of the Europa League, was “an atypical team”, “the best” of those faced in C3 since his arrival.

“Since Benfica, we have been on a dynamic path. It’s not amazing but we equalized against Toulouse, we deserved to beat Nice at 10 and we were able to get back on the road to beat Lens,” Gasset first declared at a press conference.

“We have the right state of mind. We have to maintain it against the best team of the four we have had to play. We will have to take it up a notch together,” he added.

Since Gasset’s arrival in Marseille, replacing Gennaro Gattuso, OM have eliminated Shakhtar Donetsk, Villarreal and Benfica Lisbon in the Europa League.

“Atalanta is an atypical team, very difficult to play against. It may not be the most high-sounding name, but it’s the best team we’ve ever faced,” he repeated.

“Their coach has been there for eight years, he has consolidated his team, he has improved it every year. They tickle the big guys in Italy. It’s not Milan or Juve, but it works very, very well,” Gasset said.

“Jordan (Veretout) played them in Italy. And I had breakfast with Fabrizio Ravanelli, who told me that it will be difficult,” concluded the Marseille coach.
