The contract of Frenchman Hubert Velud, coach of the Burkina Faso national football team eliminated from the African Cup of Nations (CAN), will not be renewed, the Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF) announced on Sunday. “While thanking coach Hubert Velud and the technical management as a whole, the executive committee took the decision not to renew the contract of the national coach and the entire management,” wrote the FBF in a press release .
The committee says it has “observed a record that falls short of the expectations of the Burkinabe people”, following the elimination of the “Stallions” in the round of 16 of the CAN, after a match against Mali (2-1). “The management of the Stallions observed during this CAN is out of step with the ambitions of the executive committee,” insisted the committee.
It “will constitute as soon as possible a competent technical framework”, with “imperative objectives of success”, looking forward to the “eliminators of the 2026 World Cup” and those of the CAN-2025, organized in Morocco. Hubert Velud, aged 64, replaced Burkinabé Kamou Malo in April 2022, for a period of two years.
A fine connoisseur of African football, he had previously managed the national teams of Togo and Sudan, and won the African Confederation Cup in 2016 with the Congolese club Tout-Puissant Mazembé. The Burkinabé “Stallions” were semi-finalists two years ago and in the last four three times in the last five CAN.
