The opening ceremony and match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, contested in the United States, Mexico and Canada by 48 teams, will take place in Mexico City in the historic Azteca stadium, Fifa announced on Sunday.

The Azteca stadium is the first stadium in history to have the honors of opening the competition for the third time, after 1970 and 1986, editions which resulted respectively, in the same enclosure, in the coronations of Brazil by Pelé and Maradona’s Argentina.
