Colombian football hit by tragedy. On Saturday, Edgar Paez, president of the Tigres FC club (D2), was shot and killed near the stadium after a defeat (2-3) against Atlético FC, reports ESPN. While returning home by car with his daughter, the 63-year-old leader was attacked by two men on a motorcycle, who fired several shots. Quickly treated by emergency services, the man died in hospital while his daughter escaped unhurt. The authorities are now investigating using video surveillance to identify the culprits, who followed the vehicle for several minutes before taking action.
“The Tigres family and the sporting community are devastated by this event,” the grieving club responded in a press release. His commitment to the team and his dedication to the development of the sport in our region left an indelible mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
“He always stood out for his respect for his friends, for his strong but respectful positions and for the love he professed for the sport that fascinates us all: football,” added Fernando Jaramillo, president of the Division Colombian Professional Football Major (DIMAYOR), which manages the professional leagues in Colombia.
In office since 2016, Edgar Paez held 49% of the shares in Tigres FC, a club located in Soacha in the southern suburbs of Bogota. According to two managers of other clubs in the country, who remain anonymous, the causes of the crime could be linked to sports betting although, for the moment, Paez is not linked to this activity.
