Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said on Friday that he supported “100%” the rejection of the Super League project displayed by his club but does not take a dim view of the authorities of European and world football being “ shaken”.

The Reds were one of the twelve rebellious clubs which launched this private European competition project in April 2021, a challenge to one of UEFA’s flagship products, the lucrative Champions League. But the idea collapsed within three days.

Seized at the initiative of the promoters of the project, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled on Thursday that UEFA had violated European laws by abusing its “dominant position” to try to nip this secession in the bud , while specifying however that the Super League project “must not necessarily be authorized”.

Liverpool, like the English Premier League, declared on Friday that it no longer supported the breakaway competition project.

“I agree 100% with this statement,” Jürgen Klopp said at a press conference on the eve of hosting leaders Arsenal in the summit clash on matchday 18 of the championship.

“But I am delighted that we have finally had a little recognition that Fifa, UEFA and other bodies cannot do what they want,” added the German coach.

“In the future,” he continued, “we will have to debate a lot of topics and if we just do what they do – like creating new competitions, adding additional matches – if we don’t really our say in what happens, I like them to be shaken up a little.”
