The Japanese Daiki Hashimoto retained his title of world all-around champion on Thursday at the World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp.

Hashimoto, also Olympic title holder, won with a score of 86.132.

He was just over a point ahead of the Ukrainian Illia Kovtun who had only taken 19th place in qualifying (84.998). The young American Frederick Richard, only 19 years old, created a surprise by winning bronze (84.332).

Hashimoto started his evening with an almost perfect ground pass but he took a big step forward on the last landing, which did not put him in the best mood. But he continued with a faultless performance that assured him victory.

First at the end of qualifying, the other Japanese in the final Kenta Chiba failed to reach the podium.
