Dutch striker Memphis Depay has injured his right calf, Atlético Madrid announced in a statement on Wednesday. He will be absent at least against Cadiz this Wednesday evening (10 p.m.) at the Metropolitano for the match which could propel the Colchoneros to second place in La Liga.
Memphis Depay left collective training on Tuesday with pain from which he had been suffering since the day before, and the diagnosis confirmed “muscle damage to the soleus muscle of the right leg”, according to Atlético, which did not specify the duration of unavailability of his player. The former Lyonnais had just missed five La Liga matches due to a thigh injury contracted in selection, during the victory of the Netherlands 3-0 against Gibraltar in the framework of the qualifiers for Euro 2024.
He returned to the team for the resounding victory at Valladolid on Sunday (2-5), to which he contributed with a late goal. The center-forward will have ten days to recover from this injury, since after the match against Cadiz, the Rojiblancos will not play again before May 14 against Elche, red lantern and already relegated to the second division. There will then be only four league matches left to play before the end of the season.
In addition to Memphis Depay, Diego Simeone will also have to pass Cadiz by Jan Oblak, Stefan Savic, Reinildo and Marcos Llorente, all in the infirmary. Depay had been transferred from FC Barcelona to Atlético this winter. Barça is the wide leader of La Liga (82 pts) ahead of Real (68), which Atlético (66) can overtake by winning its late match against Cadiz.
