A page is turning for football fans. If Canal has already fallen further behind Ligue 1 by only broadcasting the match on Saturday evening and Sunday late afternoon – and again on Canal Foot or derivative channels – the information from L Team (confirmed by the channel) this Monday had the effect of a bomb. For the first time in its history, the encrypted channel will not apply for the acquisition of Ligue 1 rights for the period 2024-2029. Unless the situation changes, Canal subscribers will no longer see Ligue 1 in the months to come.

According to our colleagues, the encrypted channel sent a letter to the Professional Football League this Monday morning to warn it of its intentions. In conflict with the LFP since the Mediapro fiasco, considering itself cheated by the agreement between the League and Amazon which allowed the new entrant to recover 80% of Ligue 1 against 250 million euros per season, while Canal had to continue to pay 332M€/season for two matches per day, Maxime Saada did not hide his intention to “stand withdraw from Ligue 1. The president of the Canal group therefore took action.

As a reminder, broadcasters interested in TV rights for the French championship have until October 17 to position themselves. Vincent Labrune, president of the LFP, does not hide his ambitions to obtain one billion euros. A realistic vision for some, while others see it as utopia. Live television broadcast rights were priced at 800 million euros per season by the Professional Football League (LFP) on September 12. Candidates have until October 16 to position themselves.
