Spaniard Alex Rins (Honda-LCR) broke his right leg on Saturday in a fall during the sprint race of the MotoGP Italian Grand Prix at Mugello (Italy), his team said on Twitter.

Rins fell during the 4th lap of the sprint but the images were not broadcast during the race. He was quickly taken to the circuit’s medical center and then airlifted to Careggi Hospital in Florence where he was diagnosed with fractures of the tibia and right fibula.

“The pilot will undergo a first operation this evening (Saturday) during which the doctors will install an external fixator to stabilize his right leg and reduce its swelling. He will remain under observation then, after the green light from the doctors, will return to Spain to undergo a new operation, ”tweeted Honda-LCR.

The 27-year-old Catalan, who won the Grand Prix of the Americas in April in Austin (Texas), was tenth in the provisional classification of the world championship and had taken ninth place on the starting grid at Mugello, round six out of 20 of the MotoGP season.

The Spaniard will miss the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday and at least the next two races scheduled in Germany and the Netherlands over the next two weeks. It might not even be back in time for the resumption after the summer break in early August at Silverstone (England).

On Sunday, the Spaniard Joan Mir, second driver of the official Honda team after his compatriot Marc Marquez, will also be missing. Indeed, he will not take the start of the GP after injuring a finger on Friday and having already given up on the sprint on Saturday.
