It may soon be possible to share your Netflix password with someone outside your home.
The streaming giant posted a news on Wednesday that stated it would begin testing methods to allow users to pay extra members of their household accounts.
The company stated in a statement that it has made it simple for people to share their Netflix accounts with features such as separate profiles and multiple streams in the Premium and Standard plans. These have been very popular but they have created confusion over when and how Netflix can share them.
Netflix stated that the improper sharing of accounts with other households has reduced its “ability to invest into great new TVs and films for our members”.
According to the company’s terms and conditions, an account cannot be shared with anyone outside your family. This rule is often ignored by subscribers.
First, the test runs of new prices for “add an additional member” on premium and standard plans will be held in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.
Anyone who has been illegally sharing passwords within these three countries can transfer their profile information to new accounts, or to “extra member” subscription accounts.
Netflix stated that they recognize that there are many entertainment options. Therefore, we want to make sure any new features are useful and flexible for subscribers, whose subscriptions help fund all of our great TV and movies. “We will be analyzing the utility of these features for members in these countries before making any changes elsewhere in the world.
Netflix last year tested a prompt that required password-freeloaders to re-enter their credentials in order to continue using the service. This nudge was meant to encourage those who share passwords to create their accounts.
