Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, injured in recent weeks and uncertain at Roland-Garros, made their mark at the Central on Wednesday on the eve of the drawing of lots which will confirm their participation or not in the tournament.

Sinner, author of a phenomenal start to the season including a first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, withdrew before his quarter-final in Madrid due to a right hip injury which left him forced to also give up playing in Rome. His participation in the Major on clay therefore raised questions.

Especially since the Italian himself had declared that he would only play in Paris if he was “100%”.

A first positive sign came from Monaco on Sunday when a photo showing him in training was posted on social networks.

Newly arrived in Paris, the world No.2 who can dethrone Novak Djokovic at the end of Roland-Garros did not seem embarrassed during his mid-day training on the Philippe-Chatrier court with Kei Nishikori to give him reply.

The two men trained for 90 minutes in wet conditions, the roof had been closed due to rain.

Taking advantage of the roof, spectators also took refuge on the Central court to watch the training of Sinner, 22 years old, who will be one of the contenders for the title if he is in full possession of his means, but nothing to do with the world and the atmosphere that accompanied Rafael Nadal’s first training session on Monday.

On Wednesday, the Spaniard with 14 titles on Parisian soil but who has not played there since his incredible success in 2022, trained with the Swiss Stan Wawrinka.

At 5:30 p.m., it was Alcaraz who entered the court for an hour and a half of training with Frenchman Lucas van Assche.

Deprived of the start of the season on clay (Monte-Carlo and Barcelona) by his painful right forearm, the Spaniard attempted a return to Madrid. But after being eliminated in the quarterfinals in the Spanish capital, he withdrew from Rome because the pain in his forearm had returned in the form of “muscle edema in the pronator round”.

The world No.3, who remains on a painful elimination in the semi-finals last year against Djokovic, did not seem handicapped by his forearm on Wednesday.

He didn’t need to warm up long, in weather conditions comparable to those of Sinner earlier, before putting weight and speed into his ball, both on the backhand and on the forehand.

The draw for the Roland-Garros 2024 draws is scheduled for Thursday at 2:00 p.m. and the tournament will begin on Sunday.
