The Irish team, N.1 in the world ranking, will defend its chances at the World Cup (September 8-October 28) in France with its captain Johnny Sexton but without the experienced pillar Cian Healy, injured on Saturday, according to the list published on Sunday.

The 35-year-old pillar (125 caps), injured in a calf during the final preparation match won 17-13 on Saturday against Samoa, is the main absentee from the group announced by coach Andy Farrell.

Hooker Dan Sheehan, also affected the previous week, is among the 33 players selected, along with hooker Ronan Kelleher, prop Dave Kilcoyne and winger Keith Earls, all players whose presence was uncertain due to various physical glitches.

The XV of Clover will be led by the opening half Johnny Sexton who, at 38, will play his fourth World Cup, a performance shared with Conor Murray and Earls.

Ireland begins its campaign on September 9 in Bordeaux against Romania in a very competitive Group B with Tonga, Scotland and South Africa, reigning world champions.
