Andres Vilaseca, captain of Uruguay, beaten 73-0 by New Zealand in Group A of the 2023 World Cup: “We have just faced the best team in the world for our 4th match during this World Cup and the physical fatigue and mental was felt. At times, we managed to play but as the match progressed, New Zealand found spaces and it became more difficult for us. We had the objective of beating Italy and we failed, but we had an impressive World Cup nonetheless. We were inferior individually, but we were able to raise our level of play, even against New Zealand. Nobody likes to lose, but you can be proud of what you did. We fought until the last second. It’s a big World Cup. We have completed three long years. They were the most beautiful and hardest days of my life. I don’t know if I was good or not, but I gave everything for the team. We have laid solid foundations and the future, I hope, will be even better.”
