After a transfer to Roma which caused a lot of talk in Italy during the summer transfer window, Belgian striker Romelo Lukaku broke the silence at a press conference this Wednesday, two days before Belgium’s qualifying match for Euro 2024 against Austria.

The former Chelsea player returned for the first time to the controversies which followed his departure from Inter for AS Roma this summer. “I’ve heard a lot of crap about me. I really thought I was going to explode,” said the 30-year-old striker. “They said I was going to sign here or there but that was false. I preferred to remain silent,” continued the Belgian.

“90% of what was said in the media was false and it was hard to keep my mouth shut. One day I will tell the truth. The others will also have to assume it at that time. If I really said how last summer went, everyone would be shocked,” added the ex-Nerazzurri.

Lukaku, loaned to Inter last season from Chelsea, was close to a transfer this summer to the Milan club’s great rival, Juventus Turin. His former teammate Lautaro Martinez as well as his former coach Simone Inzaghi did not hide their disappointment with the Belgian’s behavior.

Juventus fans also added fuel to the fire by invading the pitch of their stadium in the middle of a friendly match to show their dissatisfaction with the arrival of the former Manchester United player during the summer transfer window.

Lukaku finally flew to José Mourinho’s AS Roma and enjoyed great success at the Louve club. The striker has already scored seven goals in eight games this season with the Giallorossi.

On October 29, the Belgian will return to San Siro for the clash between Inter and Roma. A meeting which risks being heated on the pitch and in the stands. As a reminder, the Nerazzurri supporters group, Curva Nord, planned to distribute no less than 50,000 whistles to the public at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium that day, for a single objective: to whistle Romelu Lukaku at the top of his lungs.
