Inter Milan, on the verge of the semi-finals in the Champions League, made another misstep in the league by being trapped by Monza (1-0) on Saturday at San Siro, during the 30th day of Serie A.
A real cup team, on favorable ballot in C1 before the quarter-final return on Wednesday against Benfica (2-0 victory in Lisbon) and still in the running to retain their title in the Italian Cup, the formation of Simone Inzaghi regularly loses its means in Serie A, where they have only taken one point in their last five matches.
With this new defeat, the eleventh in the league, Inter (5th) fell two points from 4th place, occupied by AC Milan, the last qualifier for the next C1. It can be joined on Monday by Atalanta Bergamo (6th) if the “Dea” wins ahead of Fiorentina on Monday.
Dominating but not very dangerous, Inter were surprised on a corner taken from the head by a former resident of the Nerazzurro training center, Luca Caldirola (78th).
Romelu Lukaku, holder, waited for the second period to show off but without finding the fault, on a stung header pushed back by goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio (57th) then a violent strike flush with the skylight (58th).
His Argentine colleagues in the attack were not more in verve: Joaquin Correa found Di Gregorio on the best Milan opportunity of the first period (24th) and Lautaro Martinez, who entered in the 71st minute, did not target his head (90 3rd), to the chagrin of a San Siro not wildly reassured before welcoming Benfica on Wednesday.
