The 107th edition of the Tour of Italy (May 4-26) will conclude, as in 2023, in Rome at the end of a third week at high altitude including the ascent of the Stelvio pass and a formidable penultimate stage, according to the route revealed on Friday.
The 2024 edition will start from Venaria Reale, near Turin, and after three stages in Piedmont, will descend to Naples before returning to the Alps and the Dolomites via the Eastern coast. The first week will be marked by a 6th stage reminiscent of the Strade Bianche, with gravel paths, a 37.2 km time trial on May 10, followed the next day by an 8th stage which could do damage with its arrival at 1,450 m altitude in Prati di Tivo, in Abruzzo.
The second week will conclude with a second 31 km time trial, a prelude to a formidable sequence of three mountain stages: 15th stage (220 km) with arrival in Livigno, 16th stage with the ascent of the Stelvio pass ( 2,758 m), placed however 150 km from the finish, and 17th stage whose finish will be judged at the Brocon pass with portions at 11% (1,616 m).
But it is perhaps the 20th and penultimate stage which will decide the name of the winner of the 2024 Giro, since it includes the two ascent of Mount Grappa (1,775 m).
“For me, this is the stage that catches my attention,” assured the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, winner of the last Giro, thanks to his victory in the penultimate stage, an 18.6 km time trial. .
“You will have to be ready from the first week, the difficulties are distributed throughout the three weeks of the race,” said Giro director Mauro Vegni.
The competing runners – which may include Slovenian Tadej Pogacar for the first time – will have to cover a total of 3,319 km with four stages of more than 200 km and a total altitude difference of 42,900 m, compared to 51,400 in 2023, i.e. “ a drop of 20%,” said the boss of the event.
During this presentation, the organizer of the Giro RCS Sport announced that the women’s edition would now be called Giro d’Italia Women and will benefit from the same level in terms of organization as the men’s edition.
