Already in June 2023, an Odoxa survey hardly encouraged wild optimism regarding popular support surrounding the future Olympic Games in Paris, which will be held from July 26 to August 11. With only 58% of favorable opinion, the high mass with the five rings was in free fall of 11% compared to the previous survey dating from March 2023. And the 76% of September 2021 then seemed far, very very far away in time . And a new survey has not made it possible to change the trend. Among Ile-de-France residents, only 56% are enthusiastic about the idea of hosting the Games in around nine months.

For Odoxa, the reasons for such a decline “probably echo growing questions as the event approaches, in a context of serious concerns on the front of purchasing power but also security: these Olympics will not won’t they be too expensive? Will the organizing committee be at the level of the world high mass of sport? Will the opening ceremony be managed without excesses? Thus, 81% of those questioned say they are very worried about the question of transport – compared to 66% five months ago – and 73% are worried about the security linked to the organization of the event – compared to 66 % –. Obviously, the international context, which is anxiety-provoking to say the least, is probably not for nothing in this increasingly significant mistrust, despite the important communication from the organizers to try to reassure public opinion.

As a result, more than one in two Ile-de-France residents do not hide their desire to leave Paris during this period, with only 46% of respondents affirming their desire to enjoy the 2024 Olympics on site. 15% of Ile-de-France residents and 18% of Parisians are even considering renting their apartment in order to get a good financial deal. “It is interesting to observe how the Olympic and Paralympic Games have given Ile-de-France residents a desire to rent,” notes Erwan Lestrohan, the consulting director of Odoxa. “Among those who wish to rent their accommodation, two thirds of them will do so for the first time. Thus, “first-time rentals” will certainly represent the majority of offers on the seasonal rental market between individuals. And the desire to seize the financial opportunity created by the arrival of millions of tourists in Ile-de-France is massive. On average, French people wishing to rent their accommodation intend to offer it around 3 times the usual market price… when only 15% of them imagine renting their residence at a traditional price.

In other words, Parisians are enthusiastic about the idea of hosting the Games to better… leave the capital, and carry out a great accounting operation. For the love of sport and the Games, on the other hand…
