The Danish Caroline Wozniacki, ex-world number 1 retired since the Australian Open 2020, offered herself a prestigious victory on Wednesday in the second round of the US Open at the expense of the Czech Petra Kvitova, 11th in the world, 7- 5, 7-6 (7/5).
“Playing in the night session on the crowded Arthur-Ashe court is a dream come true,” commented the 33-year-old Dane in amazement. “Three years ago (when retiring, editor’s note) I would have said that I would never come back to this court. But to be back and beating No. 11 in the world is something!” she added.
Winner in Melbourne in 2018 and double finalist in New York (2009 and 2014), the 33-year-old player has been making her return to competition since August in Montreal after giving birth to two children. She will face for a place in the round of 16 the American Jennifer Brady, semi-finalist in New York in 2020 but dropped to 433rd in the world. Wozniacki herself is ranked 623rd in the WTA this week and received an invitation to participate in the tournament.
