The Spaniard Alvaro Martin, double European champion, won the first title of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, on the 20km walk on Saturday morning. At the end of a race postponed two hours due to a storm which hit the Hungarian capital, Martin (29) crossed the line in 1h17’32” and beat the Swede Perseus Karlström (7 seconds ), double bronze medalist at the 2022 Worlds (20 and 35 km walk), and the Brazilian Caio Bonfim (15 seconds). Martin had finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. In the French camp, Gabriel Bordier put in a good performance by beating his personal best to finish 10th (1h18’59”).
