The goalkeeper of AC Milan and the French team Mike Maignan said on Sunday the day after the racist insults he suffered during an Italian Championship match that “an entire system (must) take its responsibilities “.
“It’s not the first time this has happened to me. And I’m not the first this has happened to. We made press releases, advertising campaigns, protocols and nothing has changed,” he wrote on his X account (formerly Twitter).
“Today, an entire system must take responsibility. The perpetrators of these acts, because it is easy to act in a group, in the anonymity of a platform. The spectators who were in the stand, who saw everything, who heard everything but who chose to remain silent, you are complicit,” he denounced.
“The Udinese club, which only spoke of an interruption of the match, as if nothing had happened, you are complicit. The authorities and the prosecutor, with everything that is happening, if you do nothing, YOU WILL ALSO BE COMPLICED,” wrote Maignan.
“I am not a victim (…). It is a difficult fight, which will take time and courage. But it’s a fight that we will win,” concluded the Blues goalkeeper.
Saturday evening during the match counting for the 21st day of the Italian Championship, spectators uttered monkey cries and racist insults in the direction of Maignan. After alerting the referee of the match, he left the field, imitated by his teammates, before resuming the match five minutes later. AC Milan won the match 3-2 and consolidated their 3rd place in the Serie A standings.
The Italian Football Federation is expected to rule on the sanction imposed on Udinese this Tuesday, a sanction which could range from a fine to suspension from the stadium for one or more matches. The police and the courts were contacted. Contacted by AFP, they were unable to provide details on the ongoing investigation.
