The night that hosted the Cosmos Quartet’s performance on Monday at the Patio de los Arrayanes, Alhambra was quite cool. The evening was filled with warmth between the string players Helena Satue, Bernat Prat and Lara Fernandez, Oriol Prat and the cellist Oriol. The Cosmos, like its older brother, the Casals Quartet is known for its clean performances. However, these young performers may be a little too comfortable with the’show’ provided by other formations. This quartet has worked with some of the most prominent names in music, including Igor Levit, the pianist, and Brendel. They are certainly a group to watch.
Their appearance at the Granada Festival was their first division performance. They were the resident quartet of Palau de la Musica Catalana and they did a great job. He chose the only French-composed string quartet as his challenge, a time when he was able to do almost everything.
Cosmos also attacked Debussy’s ‘String Quartet In G minor’ in the same spirit. He used ‘Anime et tres decide’ to attack some themes that are present in the rest. These themes must be reconstructed in the memory of the listener. They listened to the composer’s instructions and sounded determined. They maintained this rhythm in ‘Scherzo, which was infused with darkness in the first viola solo that contrasts beautifully with the light emanating from the other passages. The final ‘Tres modere” was opened by the serene ‘Andantino. Here comes the story of the night. A slight indisposition caused a delay of just a few minutes before the second work began.
After this lapse, it was possible to hear the racial MauricioSotelo ‘Cuarteto numero 3,’ which conceals the grooves and dissonances with jondo inspiration. It also has an unsettling sound transmission that supposes a new way of reading chamber music repertoire.
After a short break, the night ended with Ravel’s String Quartet in F major, which he also composed. It was performed with the same skill and flair as the other two.
