Will Smith won his first Golden Globe award for his role in “King Richard,” the 2021 film about Richard Williams.
The award for Best Actor In a Motion Picture Drama went to the multihyphenate, who beat out competition such as Mahershala Ali (Swan Song), and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”). Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), and Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) were also among the candidates.
Will Smith has been nominated five times before. Although he was first nominated in 1993 for his role in “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air”, and then again in 2016 for Concussion, this year he is awarded the award.
“King Richard” tells the story Richard Williams’ life, as the father and coach to the Williams sisters. Will Smith recently said that it was the most rewarding project he has ever worked on.

He said, “I want stories that make my smile, stories that make my cry, stories that celebrate the triumph of human spirit, stories about women in the movement, and King Richard fits into that.” Smith explained that the amount of time spent on set and on these items, I don’t want anyone to ever do anything they won’t be proud of for the rest their lives.” Smith said, “So, for myself, that’s where we are right now. When I call and say to people, “Hey, come along on this journey with me,” I want it be fun. It should contribute to the evolution and growth of consciousness as well as the loving connection between people.
