The lawyer for 42-year-old Robert Abela was elected leader of the labour Party of malta, becoming also automatically the prime minister after the resignation of Joseph Muscat accused of interference in the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
on December 1, 2019 Joseph Muscat had announced his intention to resign from the post on 12 January 2020, following the controversy led to the involvement of some ministers of his government (in particular, Keith Schembri, chief of cabinet of the executive, the tourism minister Konrad Mizzi and the Economy Chris Cardona), in the scandal of the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
