The Secretary-General of the Palestinian relief Agency of the United Nations (UNRWA), Pierre Krähenbühl, resigned during an investigation into possible mismanagement temporarily.
An internal investigation had raised questions about his Management style, shared with the UNRWA on Wednesday. Details were not called. Vice-chief Christian Saunders will now temporarily assume total responsibility.
allegations in the summer
In the past few months, the UNRWA had initiated an internal investigation to ensure that the organization “operates on the highest Standards of professionalism, transparency and efficiency,” it said.
After the first allegations in the summer of Secretary-General António Guterres had emphasized that he considered the work of UNRWA for the Palestinian refugees as essential, and at the same time, all UN member States urged to support the program.
relief and works slipped into financial crisis
The UNRWA slipped into a financial crisis, after the United States had decided last year to cut payments massively. 2018, the United States had paid only $ 60 million. The year before, it had been $ 360 million. Germany was 2018 as a single country is the largest donor, with around 177 million euros.
The United Nations established UNRWA in 1949 to help Palestinian refugees. Now this supports more than 5.5 million Palestinians – people who have been fled in 1948, or sold, as well as their descendants. The UNRWA is, among others, in Jordan, in Lebanon and in the Palestinian territories, and especially, schools and health facilities. (red/sda)
