It’s called Jerusalem and it is the last concept unlined by the forges Nissan, presented at the last Tokyo Motor Show to demonstrate how the design of cars is changing hand in hand with the advent of electrical power.

The revolution starts from the head of the car, from the front: Being the electric car has no need for the traditional open-grid for the cooling of the engine, which allowed the designers to experience the unique design V-motion, creating a structure called the “shield,” literally the “shield”.

The shields used by knights in battle unite functionality and aesthetics, using materials that are durable and decorations, were the symbol of strength and prestige. Faithful to this principle, the front grille “shield” of the concept Ariya is much more than a simple aesthetic component in the replacement of the grid. The final appearance and the application in fact are not limited to the visual impact, but allow the technology behind the “shield” to work through the design elements without interference.

“by Replacing the conventional grill with this “shield technology” – with an innovative 3D texture functions that go beyond the aesthetics – we wanted to give prominence to the technology of the vehicle, beyond the surface,” explained Alfonso Albaisa, Senior Vice President of Global Design at Nissan. “In this case, it comes to advanced technologies that help the concept Ariya to read the road and see what the driver was unable to see, making the invisible visible.”

The grille “shield” is formed by a single piece composed by a geometric pattern, traditional japanese, for a new expression EV that emphasizes the J-DNA of Nissan. “The surface has no openings,” said Giovanny Arroba, Program Design Director of Nissan. “It is smooth as a mirror of water, silent, with the pattern of the kumiko visible just under the surface.”

Give shape to this idea of quiet was not easy. Arroba, and the design team have tested the “shield” in its every aspect, by the thickness of the material to the amount of metal blades to be inserted in the paint to bring out the pattern of the kumiko in his version reinvented for the era of electric vehicles.

To protect the grille and the technology contained in it by the most aggressive atmospheric agents and by road debris, the designers have used the same type of polycarbonate plastic used for the headlights.

The idea is to create an element that is not only durable and functional but also aesthetically impeccable, the proportion of the aerodynamic optimum and able to communicate with the new style of the Timeless Japanese Futurism of Nissan. “Of course being a concept we could adopt other approaches that are more direct,” he concluded Arroba. “But we wanted to find a balance true between the intention of the stylistic and mechanical requirements”.
