Italian international defender Leonardo Bonucci (36), European champion in 2021 with the Nazionale, has signed up until the end of the season with Fenerbahçe, the Turkish club announced on Thursday.

“The experienced defender will wear the Fenerbahçe jersey until the end of the 2023-24 season,” the Istanbul team, currently at the top of the Turkish Süper Lig, said in a press release.

Arriving Wednesday evening in Istanbul, Leonardo Bonucci signed at the beginning of September at Union Berlin, after being pushed out at Juventus Turin, where he spent twelve seasons between 2010 and 2023.

The former captain of the Old Lady, who won the Italian championship nine times (8 with Juve, 1 with Inter), will have the mission of helping Fenerbahçe regain control of the Turkish championship , which the Istanbul club has not won since 2014, an eternity for its supporters.

Leonardo Bonucci indicated on his Instagram account that this was the “probable last season” of his career.

Led in particular by Bosnian veteran Edin Dzeko, current top scorer in the Turkish championship, Fenerbahçe occupies first place in the Süper Lig standings after 19 days, two steps ahead of its great rival Galatasaray.
