Tonight the sun shall go down over more than 45 years of presence in the United Kingdom in the european Union. Today will inevitably be a day of reflection and mixed emotions for us, the presidents of the three main institutions of the european Union, but also for many other people.
our thoughts go to all those who have contributed to making the european Union what it is. To those who are worried about their future or disappointed to see leave the United Kingdom. Members british of our institutions that have contributed to the shaping of policies that have improved the lives of millions of europeans. Our thoughts go to the United Kingdom and its citizens, their creativity, their intelligence, their culture and their traditions, which were an integral part of the fabric of europe.

These emotions reflect our affection for the United Kingdom, is a feeling that goes well beyond the membership of our Union. The United Kingdom decision to leave saddens us deeply, but we have always fully respected. The agreement reached is fair to both parties and ensures that the rights of millions of citizens of the Eu and the United Kingdom continue to be protected in the place they call home. However, we need to look to the future and build a new partnership between long-time friends. Together, our three institutions will do everything in their power to ensure its success. We are ready to be ambitious. This partnership will be more or less tight depending on the decisions that we make, because every choice has its consequences. Without the free movement of persons, there can be no free movement of capital, goods and services. Without equal conditions in the fields of environment, employment, taxation and State aid, there can be an optimal access to the single market. If you are not a member you can retain the benefits of the membership.

In the weeks, months and years to come we will have to partially loosen the ties meticulously woven for over fifty years between the Eu and the United Kingdom. And we’ll also have to dedicate ourselves with the highest commitment to carve out a new path as allies, partners and friends.
Even though it is no longer a member of the Eu, the Uk will continue to be part of Europe. The geographical proximity, the common history and the bonds that we have made in many areas bind us inevitably make us natural allies. We will continue to work together in foreign affairs, security and defence, motivated by common goals and shared interests. But we will do so in different ways. Do not underestimate the task that awaits us, but we are certain that with good will and determination we can build a long lasting partnership, positive and significant.
Tomorrow will be a new dawn for Europe. These recent years we have approached as nations, institutions and people. They have reminded us all that the european Union is not just a market or an economic power, but is a set of values that we all share and defend. United we are much stronger.

For this reason, the member States of the european Union will continue to join forces and build a common future. In an era of intense power struggles and turmoil of geopolitics, the dimensions are important. No Country alone can stem the tide of climate change, find the solutions for the digital future or speak with authoritative voice in the growing cacophony of the world. Together, however, the european Union can do it. We can, because we have the biggest internal market in the world. We can, because we are the first trading partner of 80 countries. We can, because we are a Union of democracies, the dynamics. We can, because our nations are determined to promote the interests and values of europeans on the world stage. We can, because the member States of the Eu will leverage their considerable economic power collective in the discussions with allies and partners (the United States, Africa, China or India).

All of this, infuses us with a renewed sense of community objectives. We have a shared vision of where we want to go, and the commitment to be ambitious on the key issues of our times. As indicated in the Green Deal the european, we want to become the first continent to climate impact to zero by 2050, creating new jobs and opportunities for people. We want to be at the head of the next generation of digital technologies, and we want a transition right to the support of the people most affected by the change. We know that only the european Union can do it. And we know that we can only do together: people, nations, and institutions. And we, the presidents of the three institutions, we are committed to do our part. Tomorrow the sun will rise and our work will continue.
