The “plan of the century” invented by Donald Trump to regulate the israeli-palestinian question creates every day new problems. The paradox is that now is starting to divide the same field, from israel, from which attacks are launched to the us administration. Announcing the plan, Trump and his associates had said that the United States would recognize the annexation by Israel of 30 percent of the west bank. And that the annexation would be able to start immediately. But then Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of the president who has coordinated the working group of american, stated that the annexation could start only when there will be a new israeli government after the elections.
This has given rise to the irritation of the right of the israeli against the young Kushner. The annexation of the settlements with the blessing of the american would have been a shot in the election to Netanyahu prior to the elections of 2 march. But now the initial euphoria of the Likud, the party of the prime minister, seems to have deflated. In Israel, many accuse Netanyahu of having sold out the theme of the annexation without the support of the Us Administration. Others, however, accuse Kushner of having betrayed the cause of Israel. According to Nadav Eyal, a journalist of the tv Channel 13, the entourage of Netanyahu argues that Kushner has “”stabbed in the back by the first minister”.
Phrase repeated in the Washington Post by David Elhayani, the powerful leader of the “Yesha Council”, a body of coordination of the 150 israeli settlements in the west bank: “Kushner has stabbed Netanyahu behind him, he deceived the prime minister, knew perfectly well that Netanyahu would have wanted to declare the sovereignty of Israel over the Jordan Valley”. The co-ordinator of the settlers adds that “at this point, this could cost you the elections of 2 march to Netanyahu”.
Immediately after the announcement of Trump Tuesday, 28 January, Netanyahu had announced that he would be declared the annexation with a council of ministers convened on Sunday 2 February. The american ambassador, David Friedman, had added that the choice of the times it was up to the israelis. If the government “will apply israeli law in the settlements and the territories allocated to Israel according to the plan” we are, then we will recognize the israeli sovereignty,” said Friedman.
But by Friday, starting with an interview with an egyptian tv, and continuing on Sunday with a speech to the Cnn, Kushner has stated that the annexation could not occur without applying the rest of the floor, which, however, provides for the creation of a palestinian state. But above all, we have to wait until the new israeli government. And this puts into crisis the plans of the electoral campaign of Netanyahu to use the plan for new moves of the propaganda prior to the vote on the 2nd of march.
The condemnation of the European Union
In the meantime came the official position of the European Union. “The minister of Foreign affairs” in Brussels, Josep Borrell has said that “the Eu recalls its commitment to a negotiated settlement for two States based on 1967 borders, with equivalent exchanges of lands with the State of Israel and an independent State, democratic, sovereign Palestine, living side by side in peace. The initiative, us, presented on the 28th of January, deviates from these parameters agreed at the international level, as indicated in the Council conclusions of July 2014”.
The rejection of Borrell has been elaborated, clearly after having consulted the governments of the 27 member states of the Union. Borrell goes on to say that “to build a just and lasting peace, the unresolved issues on the final status should be decided through direct negotiations between the two parties”. At this point, the representative of the Eu makes direct reference to the possibility that Israel will face of the annexation has completed the negotiations: “The Eu calls on both parties to engage again and to refrain from any unilateral action contrary to international law that might aggravate tensions. We are particularly concerned about the declarations on the prospect of annexation of the Jordan Valley and other parts of the west bank”.
To Borrell has responded quickly to the spokesman of the ministry of Foreign affairs of Jerusalem, Lior Haiat, which he defines as “regrettable and bizarre” the fact that Borrell has chosen to use a language that is threatening toward Israel, so a short time after he assumed his position, and at a distance of few hours from his meetings in Iran, continuing these policies and conduct is the best way to ensure that the role of the Eu, in any process, is reduced”.
