SURPRISE, after a period of suspension decided by the government of Tripoli, in Geneva resumed talks of the “military committee 5+5” among the forces of the libyan government of Fayez Serraj and military representatives of general Khalifa Haftar. The talks organized by the United Nations were blocked by the government Serraj after that the troops of Haftar had shelled with rockets the port of Tripoli, claiming to have targeted a Turkish ship that unloaded weapons in the capital.
In convincing the two parties to resume the talks, a role must have had the pressures of the United States: the american ambassador to Libya Richard Norland was the first to praise “the Gna and Lna (libyan national army) for the resumption of talks in the format 5+5 in Geneva,” reads a statement from the american embassy, which is intended to fit in Tunis.
Norland had met on Tuesday, the general of the libyan Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi, and yesterday he spoke to the chairman, Fayez Serraj for a “report of the meeting and to discuss the prospects of a cease-fire lasting”.
Among other things, at the end of the meeting between the two military delegations, the Un envoy Ghassan Salamè announced that “an agreement was reached for exchange of prisoners during the negotiations, intra-libyan in Geneva”. Salamè he added that “the decision to resume negotiations was a decision in libya.
In the meantime, the president Serraj flew once again to Ankara where he met Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan: Turkey has become practically the sole sponsor of the political and military of the government of Tripoli, apart from the financial support of Qatar. Ankara has had a decisive role in the “save” Tripoli during the attack the toughest of the troops of Haftar, but at this point has polarized and unified, the opposition to the government Serraj countries that do not want an enlargement of the sphere of influence of Ankara in the centre of the Mediterranean.
