It never rains to everyone’s liking, as has been seen during this Holy Week that has just ended and that has left more rain than processions. There is not much to celebrate in the automobile sector either, since sales of new cars in Spain have fallen by 4.71% to a total of 94,840 units registered last month due to the fact that, this year, Easter has fallen in March and not in April, unlike what happened last year.

But as there always have to be winners and losers, the big winners in March have been Toyota (once again) and the Nissan Qashqai, which ended up as the best-selling brand and model of the month, respectively, according to data published this Monday by the associations of manufacturers (Anfac), dealers (Faconauto) and sellers (Ganvam).

The Japanese brand was intractable in March (and it has been many months in a row) with 9,343 cars sold, 15.6% more than the previous year, thus expanding its advantage in the accumulated number of the year with 23,043 registered units and an increase year-on-year of 11.1%. This time, the best-selling Toyota models of the month were the Yaris and the Corolla, which finished third and fourth, respectively.

The best-selling model this time was not the Dacia Sandero, market leader in 2023, but the Nissan Qashqai, which ended the month with 2,775 registered units and a strong increase of 27.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Japanese SUV, which for years was the best-selling SUV in Spain and was on several occasions on the verge of conquering the Spanish registration market, presents its candidacy again in 2024 and is already third in the year’s total, a very short distance away. of the Toyota Corolla, which occupies the provisional second position in the year’s ranking.

The Nissan Qashai is a 4.4 meter long compact SUV that is on sale from 32,700 euros with light hybridization (‘mild hybrid’) or conventional hybridization (‘full hybrid’) versions with three power levels (140 , 158 and 190 CV), all with the DGT ECO label.

The second best-selling model in March was the Dacia Sandero with 2,574 registered units, 30.5% more than in the same period of the previous year, so it remains the great favorite to conquer the market again in 2024. The utility vehicle Romanian, the best-selling car to individuals in Spain for a decade, leads sales with 7,161 cars delivered so far this year, 1,000 more units than the Corolla and the Qashqai.

The Toyota Yaris completed the podium for the month with 2,317 units registered and a strong increase of 159%, while the Toyota Corolla was fourth with 2,266 deliveries and the Hyundai Tucson occupied fifth position with 2,122 deliveries. The list of the 10 best-selling cars in March was completed by the Kia Stonic, the Peugeot 208, the MG ZS, the Nissan Juke and the Seat Arona.

In the year’s total, the Nissan Qashqai climbed from fourth to third position, while the Hyundai Tucson rose three positions to fourth place and the Toyota Yaris Cross slipped into the top 10 of the ranking.

In terms of brands, Toyota once again led sales in March with 9,343 registered units, followed by Kia and Volkswagen with 7,269 and 5,822 deliveries, respectively. Seat occupied fourth position with 5,753 cars sold and a drop of 24.2%, while Peugeot was fifth with 5,729 deliveries and a drop of 28.5%.

Nissan was the great revelation of March with 4,953 registered units and two models, Qashqai and Juke, among the 10 best sellers. The Japanese brand finished the month in seventh position and is close to the ’top 10′ of the best-selling brands in Spain so far this year with 10,401 cars delivered, practically the same as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the two brands that precede it in the classification.
