NOT JUST as an apple a day “keeps the doctor away”, but eating an egg daily would not be risky for our health. Hinting at it is a team of researchers from the Population Health Research Institute (Phri) of McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences, Canada. Their study is the last chapter in the long and still ongoing debate on the consumption of eggs and their effects on health, especially on our heart. According to the researchers, put into the pot an egg a day does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or to die prematurely.

An egg a day In the new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers reviewed data from three studies conducted in 50 Countries, involving a total of 177 thousand persons, of which 146 thousand healthy and 31 thousand suffering from cardiovascular diseases. Focusing on data related to the dietary habits of the participants, the researchers observed that there was no damage to health associated with the consumption of eggs, even in those who ate one a day.

“Given that most of the participants in the studies consumed a maximum of one egg per day, ” explains says Mahshid Dehghan, the author of the research – it would be safer to not exceed this limit. Taking moderate of eggs, which is equal to one egg per day for most people, does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or mortality, even in those who have a family history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes”. Also, explain the researchers, there was no significant association between egg consumption and higher cholesterol levels in the blood. “These results are robust and widely applicable both to healthy individuals and those with vascular disease,” adds the author.

recommended Doses Although the eggs are a rich source of essential nutrients and energy, have long been at the centre of a long debate for their cholesterol content, and believed to be liable to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, and premature death. So much so that guidelines in some Countries recommend limiting consumption to less than three eggs per week. According to the Italian guidelines, for example, it is suggested to consume up to four eggs a week for those who are in good health. However, the results of previous studies that had focused on the relationship between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease have so far been contradictory. “This is because most of these studies was relatively small or moderate and did not include individuals from a large number of Countries,” says Salim Yusuf, the co-author of the study.
