Never has there been more disasters, under which children have to suffer and UNICEF lack the means. 3.9 billion Euro needs the children’s Fund the United Nations later this year.

children as victims, schools as targets – so it sounds like what UNICEF calls the war against the children of the world: schools and hospitals as strategic bombing targets. In Yemen. In other war zones and crisis areas. In Syria. Children as the victims. A thousand-fold.

all the people in that year, 2019, the 70. Birthday of the Geneva conventions, says the Deputy Director for UNICEF’s emergency programs Grant Leaity, go back in the world of respect for the conventions, standards, and human rights: “We are particularly concerned about this ignorance towards human rights and the standards that were considered earlier.”

UNICEF, the needs children’s Fund, the United Nations, self-help. The call for donations for the year 2019 as big as never before: The helper, the UN will need $ 3.9 billion to the 41 million children in a total of 59 disaster areas around the world.

more and more disasters

Never has there been more disasters, they never were so preventable, says the UNICEF’s emergency relief Director. “The saddest thing about this fundraiser is that 88 percent of all disasters are man-made crises.” War and massacre. Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Congo, and Myanmar – the list seems as endless as the financial needs of the helper.

“The sum, we need to help is growing steadily. The Trend is steadily,” says Leaity. “1.9 billion in 2014. There are now 3.9 billion dollars.” The money comes from States, foundations but also from private donors. The biggest Problem of UNICEF: frustration and indifference.

Growing donor fatigue

So many people on the run like never since the Second world war. More and more crises to help more and more often, the feeling of the people, in spite of donations and the willingness to pass nothing, or too little, so Leaty: “Sometimes there are just too many crises all at once, and in the case of some crises, which take a very long time as the Syria war, as a kind of donor fatigue for the people then.”

But the man-made disasters other: the second-largest Ebola outbreak in the world currently, in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is only one example.

In the case of UNICEF, they are realistic. One hundred percent of the needed 3.9 billion, you will not get. But each says Leaity, help and the helpers remain optimists, of necessity: “If we have no more hope, it would be sad. We must always find a way, no matter what the situation is.”
